There are three Environmental Stewardship schemes currently on the go.

Countryside Stewardship (CSS)  (no longer open )

Entry Level Stewardship (ELS) – is open to all farms and offers a payment of £30 per hectare in return for doing enough land management ‘options’ to gain 30 points per hectare

Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) – is competitive and involves using targeted options to address target features on your farm such as farmland birds, farm wildlife and archaeological features.

For up-to-date information on scheme entry check the Natural England website.  Natural England are currently able to offer advisory visits regarding ELS.

If you are unsure of your best route into Stewardship, free advice and paperwork support is available through the RSPB’s Fenland Farmland Bird Recovery Project.

Whether you’re in Stewardship or not, you need to make sure you are doing your bit for the Campaign for the Farmed Environment, the industry-led initiative to keep management of the farmed environment voluntary.  Have a look at their website to find out how to take part and ‘Make Every Acre Count’.
